TROMPE L'OEIL

Trompe L'Oeil, or Trick of the Eye, creates a 3d illusion on a 2d surface. Why does it work? Because you are painting a relatively realistic image in a place that it  would logically be- a niche with artwork  in an entryway, a brick facade on a house, a door going out to the garden- and because, as humans, we do not question what seems to be logical, our brains assume that what we see is really there. It is not as much about the expertise of the painting as much as the perfect placement of the image.
I cannot tell you how many times I have heard stories from my clients that someone tried to grab a painted door handle or tried to walk through door painted on a wall (ouch!) or touched a painted panel, surprised that it was a flat canvas surface rather than a dimensional wood or plaster surface.
